The International Reading Group (IRG)

This International Reading Group assembles from time to time for fortnightly online discussions about books, chapters or journal articles of mutual interest.

It began in 2013 with an online discussion of a chapter by Arjun Appadurai called ‘The capacity to aspire: Culture and the terms of recognition’. For three weeks, the thirty or so academics and students from around the world (India, the Netherlands, South Africa, Australia, the USA and the UK) discussed the article on a Ning especially set up for the group.

A second discussion took place in Nov/Dec 2013 on an article by Valerie Walkerdine (see below).

Membership fluctuates, according to what we're reading. Some of us take part in all or most of the discussions; others come in and out, depending on the reading. Some are active and regular contributors to the discussion; others just enjoy reading the responses.

Our work

  1. Meeting online, to discuss specific articles, at designated times for a fortnight.
  2. Providing an online space where members can write occasional blog posts, sharing thoughts about articles they read, conferences they go to, experiences or ideas they have.
  3. Floating ideas for collaborative work.
  4. Sharing stories/poems/creative work
